Our Founding Members

Our History

In the fall of 1902, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio opened its doors to female students. Six young women, Julia Bishop, Anne Simmons, Mary Collins, Anna Keen, Mabelle Minton, and Alfa Lloyd, came together to form a social sorority, they had a vision of a lifetime of sisterhood.

They were faced with many challeges starting a sorority on a male-dominated campus, this only made their bond stronger. The six women met with President Dr. Guy Potter Benton, a former leader Phi Delta Theta, regarding the founding of the first sorority chapter. With his help the women were able to establish The Delta Zeta Sorority. For his contributions to our sorority and his aid to our founders, he was named 'Grand Patron' of Delta Zeta. The Delta Zeta sorority was officially incorporated on October 24, 1902.

Little did these six friends know that Delta Zeta would continue to prosper throughout the years and  grow into the second largest international sorority. Delta Zeta has enriched the lives of more than 240,000 alumnae and collegiate members in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

Our Creed

Delta Zeta National Crest

To the world,
I promise temperance and insight and courage,
To crusade for justice,
To seek the truth and defend it always;

To those whom my life may touch in slight measure,
May I give graciously
Of what is mine;

To my friends,
Understanding and appreciation;

To those closer ones,

Love that is ever steadfast;

To my mind,
Growth;

To myself,
Faith

That I may walk truly
In the light of the Flame.
